A look at the marketing that surrounds us.

Movie Monday: Couples Retreat

Posted by Rosepixie on December 14, 2009

I came across this trailer on YouTube and decided to post it here because I’m not sure what to make of it.  It’s for a movie called Couples Retreat.

Ok, so putting aside that this really doesn’t look like a movie I’d be likely to actually watch, I found the trailer odd.  While it tells us about the set up (couples with issues, some of them unexpressed, go to an island where they are supposed to undergo couples therapy), it fails to even acknowledge that there might be any plot.  Now, it’s incredibly rare to find a movie that actually doesn’t have a plot.  Even the stupid ones typically have plots.  In fact, the only movie I can think of that actually didn’t have one (or, rather, abandoned it part way through) was Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (which I still blame Michael and Brian for making me see).

But apparently this movie, Couples Retreat, has a set up and then lots of sex jokes.  At least, according to the trailer that’s all it is.  Now I can appreciate wanting to hide some or even the vast majority of the plot from the audience before they see the movie.  What fun is it to know what’s going to happen before you see it, after all?  But it seems like short-changing yourself to not even hint that your movie might have plot.  While there are people who will cheerfully go see a movie based solely on the jokes in the trailer, there are many more who like to have some idea of what the plot is before they walk into the theater.  And the jokes were, by and large, not even that funny.

So I really don’t know much about this movie, but I do know that this trailer doesn’t seem like it’s actually doing a good job of attracting as wide an audience as possible, which should be the aim of most trailers (at least, I’m told that’s the aim of most trailers).
