Vintage Friday: The Archie Club
Posted by Rosepixie on October 9, 2009
This is an ad for the Archie Club and it’s from an Archie’s Christmas Stocking comic from sometime in the early 1960s.
The text reads:
Be an Archie Club Member eligible to win cash prizes and a big byline in an Archie Series Comic! By joining the Archie Club as an official reporter… you get a dressy, colorful Official Archie Club Button, and a handsome, authentic Archie Reporter Press Card!
Fill out the coupon now and mail it with 20cents in coin (to cover cost of handling) to become an Archie Club Member and eligible to submit letters for cash prizes.
Every member gets this official press card and beautiful 4 color button.
So let me get this straight. I send in 20 cents and this coupon and that gives me the right to send letters to the letter page (that’s what the reference to a “byline” is)? That’s a pretty good scam. Especially since the other two things I get for my 20 cents are printed right here in the magazine. Now, presumably the ones I’d get in the mail would be printed on card stock and maybe even a plastic button, but they’re probably about the same size. So why don’t I just cut these out, mount them and save myself the twenty cents? I’d have to cut up the page to send in the coupon anyway. I’m sure this worked great and got lots of kids to send in their allowance for a cheap button and the promise of prizes in the future, but it’s so oddly set up that it made me laugh when I came across it. The fact that you have to send in to be able to write letters to the magazines was really what made me decide to feature this one. I wonder what marketing guy came up with that one.
