Lipstick Jungle: Sex and the City?

Posted by Rosepixie on September 20, 2009

This ad is from a fashion magazine and is for the television show Lipstick Jungle, which I believe is based on a book of the same name by Candice Bushnell.

The text reads:

Bright lights.  Big city.  Best friends.

Lipstick Jungle

I’ve never seen this show and have little interest, but I must say that I have even less interest after seeing this ad.  The image in the ad suggests to me that the show is basically exactly like Sex and the City, but with three women instead of four.  The hip clothes, the too-nice apartment, the ever-present drinks (how come no one in that show ever had to start going to Alcoholics Anonymous?)…   What’s supposed to make this show new and different?  Why is the whole image black and white except for the wine in the glasses, which is red, and the top of the building outside the window?  Is the wine that important that it gets to be in color?  The poses of the women are a little weird.  Why are they so scrunched together on the couch?  Seriously, have you ever sat that close to your friend while just hanging out and having drinks if you weren’t looking to date her?  It looks incredibly awkward in that picture.  The show might be fun and different, but this ad doesn’t show it.  It suggests that this is more of the same boring stuff we’ve seen.  Sorry, when there actually are innovative new things out there to be watching instead, I’ll pass.

Hmm… I think it’s unlikely, but an amusing alternate explanation for their super snuggle positions might be that the “lipstick” in the title is supposed to imply “lipstick lesbians.” 😉
