an Ad a Day

A look at the marketing that surrounds us.

Gap Jeans: Born to be Worn?

Posted by Rosepixie on September 10, 2009

This is a Gap commercial and I found it after visiting the Gap website to look for something else.

I like what’s being said here.  It’s interesting and the actress appeals to me (if nothing else, she’s got the twin virtues of being an actress I recognize from something I enjoy, but am not weary of seeing plastered all over every magazine cover and movie poster).  This ad is part of a whole series of ads with all different people (designers, artists, CEOs, etc.) all talking about what they do and why they do it.  Each is reduced to a “born to X” phrase, which is more than a little annoying, given how thoughtful and interesting many of the statements are, but it is an ad campaign and it’s hard to convince PR people that a catchphrase isn’t necessary.  Ultimately, I don’t think these sell jeans very well.  As interesting videos, though, I think they are great.

I think the light makeup was a very good call. She looks like a real human rather than a china doll, which seems more likely to make me empathize with an honest and personal message. 🙂
