Leviathan: A New Look at the Great War

This is the new book trailer for Scott Westerfeld’s upcoming new book, Leviathan. It’s going to be the first in a steampunk flavored alternate history series set during World War I.
I love this trailer for so many reasons. The voice over strikes the perfect balance between documentary-tone and storytelling-tone to draw you in and set the scene. My favorite part, though, is the map. It’s such a great map! The first time I saw it I thought it was cool, but I didn’t fully get it. Now, I think it’s brilliant how it uses the imagery of the “Clankers” and the “Darwinists” to show how the two philosophies are split along the same political lines that were drawn during the Great War. So you get a map illustrating how Europe was divided during the war, but with this great steampunk flavor that is perfect for setting the scene for Westerfeld’s reimagined view of the time period.
Most importantly, this trailer absolutely cemented that this book is going to be a wild ride and I definitely want to read it, which is what it’s goal was in the first place. Book trailers are still kind of a new thing and many end up being kind of ridiculous and making people laugh more than creating any real interest in the book. This one does exactly what it’s supposed to do and I’m super impressed with it.
